Richard Uchansky

June 03, 2025

Richard “Rick” Uchansky, 77, passed away on April 30, 2025, in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. He was born on August 5th, 1947, to the late Matthew Uchansky and Ginny Gross. He served in the United States Marine Corps and later co-founded J&R Roofing with his late brother John — a business known for its reliability, craftsmanship, and deep roots in the Memphis community. Richard also worked as a photographer in the family’s studio, focusing mostly on weddings. He had a quiet talent for catching the moments that mattered — often before anyone else knew they were happening. Always more of an observer than a director, he let the scenes unfold naturally and captured them with grace. Richard was a devoted fan of sports in all forms and followed games with a sharp eye, a memory for statistics, and a fascination with how strategy, skill, and heart all fit together. The Yankees were his team, but his love of the game went far beyond the box score. And if the matchup looked promising, there may have been a small wager involved — purely in the name of spirited analysis. He is survived by his brothers Steve Uchansky of Memphis and David Uchansky of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Ginny; one brother, John and one sister Janet Mills. Richard’s memory lives on in the things he loved: a well-timed photo, a good game, a clever statistic, a quiet reflection, a small wager — and a joke told just right. Above all, he was a devoted son, a loyal and generous brother, and a true friend — steady, thoughtful, and larger than life in all the ways that mattered.  A memorial service for Richard is pending.  Tribute video at www.fowlerfh.com
