Mable Johnson
Mable Christene Johnson was born on April 28, 1927 in Holly Grove, Arkansas to William Johnson and Effie Collins. She was reared from an early age by her maternal grandparents Ben and Clara Edwards of Holly Grove, Arkansas. While being raised in their home, Mable was given the nick name " Sis" or "Sis Ben".
Mable was reared in a Christian home and confessed Christ as her personal savior at an early age and became a member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Holly Grove, Arkansas under Rev. Alexander, and later she worshipped under the leadership of Rev. W.B. Vasser and Rev. Reggie Rose after her return to Arkansas.
She served as an usher of the church and took great pride in her church duties and her church family. She also loved to sing “This little light of mine…” while at church, and anywhere else whenever she felt led to.
Mable received her formal education in the Holly Grove, Arkansas where she matriculated at the St. John Church colored school.
As a young lady, Mable relocated to Newark, New Jersey for decades where she worked in hospitality. Mable later returned to Holly Grove “The Crossroads” where she resided with her cousin Earlie Mae, whom they considered each other as sisters. Following her return, Mable was employed at the Lady Luck Casino Resort in Lula, Mississippi.
Mable was a lady who loved to being around her family and having a great time. She was an avid card player and could be consider a “pro” at playing Spades. She also loved playing Bingo. Mable took great pride in her appearance, especially keeping her nails manicured and painted.
When she could no longer live alone, Mable relocated to the Crestpark Skilled Nursing & Rehab Center in Stuttgart, Arkansas where she remained until the Lord called her home.
On November 27, 2022, God pardoned Mable’s sweet soul from mortality, and granted her a mansion in Glory. She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved cousins Earlie Mae Cartwright, Clarence Cartwright, and Freeman Cartwright.
Mable Johnson’s precious memories will be cherished by those who will continue to love her, her bonus daughter Sandra Cartwright-Betts (Ronald) of Turner, AR; her bonus grandchildren Marcus Cartwright, Tamarius “Pooh” Cartwright, both of Holly Grove, AR, Lamario Cartwright (Roniqua) of Stuttgart, AR, and Freeman Cartwright of Dallas, TX, Sabrina Cartwright of Dallas, TX, and Rachel Murray of Holly Grove, AR; her beloved cousins Bessie Archie, Brenda (Julius) Phillips, Vickie Cartwright, Frederick (Latrice) Cartwright, and Virgil Hennessey, all of Dallas, TX, Bettie Bailey, and Barbara Smith both of Nashville, TN, Glendora (Robert) Brown, Orlando Cartwright both of Pine Bluff, AR, ten great grandchildren, and a host of loving cousins, relatives, and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am on December 10, 2022 at St. Matthew Baptist Church, 15537 US 49, Marvell, AR 72366. Burial will take place at Israel Chapel Cemetery in Turner, AR. Pastor Reggie Rose is the eulogist. Public viewing will be at Branscumb Funeral Home on Friday December 9, 2022 from 9 am to 4 pm. Branscumb-Johnson-Gilchrest Funeral Home. (870) 734-2772.
